When I was growing up my dream was to become a Paleontologist. Sometimes I still wish I had pursued that career path. I was fascinated by Dinosaurs, and the more I learned about them the more questions arose. In the Northwestern section of my home State of Maine, there are fossils everywhere. On fly fishing trips, we would spend the middle of the day - when the sun was high and the fishing was poor - walking the gravel roads that were built by the paper companies, and pick up some amazing fossils. I still have many today.
So some of these stories I stumbled upon years ago really caught my interest. Tales of seemingly man-made items being found in rocks or coal dating back millions, or hundreds of millions, of years ....during the Triassic or Jurassic Periods, or in some cases going back even farther.
The science community calls these "Ooparts", which stands for "Out Of Place Artifacts". It seems impossible to imagine...."Tin-Hat" stuff. And yet these are not unique or even extremely rare any more. More and more are being found every year, on every continent.
Talk about the ultimate collectible!
This linked article is one of the better I have come across explaining this phenomenon. I think you will find it interesting.
